Recovery and Muscle Terms You'll Encounter

Recovery vocabulary often causes confusion, particularly around soreness and muscle growth. Two terms come up repeatedly: DOMS and hypertrophy.

DOMS is frequently misread as a sign of a productive workout — more soreness equaling more gain. Research does not support this interpretation. DOMS reflects tissue stress from unfamiliar movement patterns or high training volume, and it diminishes as the body adapts. Consistently sore muscles may actually indicate insufficient recovery rather than effective training.

Hypertrophy, by contrast, is the measurable increase in muscle size that results from sufficient training volume and adequate recovery combined with appropriate nutrition. It occurs gradually over weeks and months, not days.
