What Private Browsing Actually Does
Most major browsers offer some version of private browsing — Chrome calls it Incognito, Firefox calls it a Private Window, Safari uses the same term. When you open one of these sessions, your browser stops recording the websites you visit, clears cookies when you close the window, and doesn't save anything you type into forms or search bars.
That's genuinely useful in specific situations. If you're shopping for a surprise gift on a shared family computer, private mode ensures your searches don't pop up later in autocomplete or history. If you're logging into a personal account on a public library computer, it reduces the chance that your session persists after you leave.
But here's the critical distinction: private browsing is a local privacy tool. It manages what gets stored on your device. It does almost nothing about what gets seen by the rest of the internet — and that's where most people's assumptions break down. Common Myths — Corrected
The gap between what people believe private browsing does and what it actually does is significant. Below are the most widespread misconceptions, along with what the evidence actually shows.
Myth
Private browsing makes me anonymous online — websites can't tell who I am.
Fact
Websites can still see your IP address, which roughly identifies your location and internet connection, regardless of browsing mode.
Every device that connects to the internet is assigned an IP address by your internet service provider (ISP). This address travels with every request you send to a website. Private browsing doesn't change or hide your IP address, so any site you visit can log it — and your ISP can see which sites you're connecting to in real time.
Beyond IP addresses, websites also use a technique called browser fingerprinting: collecting details about your browser version, screen resolution, installed fonts, time zone, and more to build a profile that's often unique enough to identify you across sessions, even without cookies.
Myth
My employer or school can't monitor what I do if I use Incognito mode.
Fact
Network administrators on a workplace or school network can see your traffic at the network level, regardless of your browser mode.
Private browsing operates entirely within your browser. It has no ability to hide your activity from the network router or any monitoring tools installed on the network you're connected to. IT departments commonly use software that logs traffic at the network level — which sites were accessed, when, and from which device.
If you're on a company-owned device, the situation is even clearer: employers may have monitoring software installed directly on the machine that operates independently of any browser setting.

Incognito mode prevents websites from tracking me with cookies.
Fact
It blocks cookies from persisting after you close the window, but tracking can still occur during your active session.
While you're actively browsing in a private window, websites can still set and read cookies for that session. Advertising networks and analytics platforms can still track your movements across multiple sites during that visit. The difference is that when you close the private window, those cookies are deleted — so the tracking doesn't carry forward to your next session.
Additionally, if you log into any account during a private browsing session, that service immediately has a clear record of everything you do while signed in. The anonymity disappears the moment you identify yourself.
Myth
Private browsing protects me from hackers and malware.
Fact
Private mode has no security features that protect against malicious software or network-level attacks.
This is perhaps the most dangerous misconception, because it can lead people to take risks they otherwise wouldn't. Private browsing doesn't scan downloads for malware, doesn't block phishing sites, and doesn't encrypt your connection. If you download an infected file in Incognito mode, it still infects your device. If you're on an unsecured network, your traffic is just as exposed as it would be in a regular window.
For protection against those threats, you need dedicated security tools: up-to-date antivirus software, encrypted connections (look for HTTPS), and caution on public networks. Private browsing addresses none of these.
What You Can Do Instead
If your goal goes beyond keeping your browsing history off your own device, you'll need additional layers of protection. Here are the approaches most commonly recommended by privacy researchers:
- Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network): A VPN encrypts your traffic and masks your IP address from the sites you visit, making it harder for third parties to track your location and activity. Logging In Cancels Out Anonymity
The moment you sign into any account — Google, Facebook, your email — during a private browsing session, that service links all your activity in that session directly to your account. Private mode cannot anonymize a logged-in session. If anonymity is your goal, stay signed out and avoid entering any identifying information.
